Any
company looking to take action to reduce their excess inventory or
establish reasonable controls to curtail the growth of inventory should
read this book. The principals presented are done in an understandable,
straightforward manner. There are not a lot of fancy formula-driven
theories, but there are focused recommendations for specific actions to
have immediate effect on inventory value.
Phil Slater’s work in
“The 7 Actions for Inventory Reduction” gave us the words we needed to
communicate inventory control concerns to the rest of our company. His
explanations of inventory problems and how they relate to cash flow opened
the eyes of many of our employees who could not previously understand why
excess inventory is a problem.
Our business is driven by equipment availability. The tendency to
overstock inventory in the name of reliability put millions of dollars of
cash on our shelves that could have been otherwise employed in our
business. This book helped us reverse the trend of growing inventory for
the first time in the 30-year history our company.
Phil not only explains how to reduce inventory, but also how to change the
mindset of all of us that have done nothing but expand our inventories for
years. This philosophy/cultural change is the key to taking the immediate
reductions realized from the 7 Actions and transforming them into
long-term, sustainable lower inventory levels while still keeping our eyes
on our plant reliability needs.
We believe this book is such a powerful tool to reduce our cash invested
in inventory, we have sent a copy to each of our plant and maintenance
managers at our 21 facilities. Goals for inventory reduction were set
across the company with out any guidance on how to achieve the goals and
how to maintain inventory at a lower level while always pushing plant
performance to a higher level. Now that we have placed the - 7 Actions
for MRO and Indirect Inventory Reduction in everyone’s’ hands, we are
confident that our goals will be easily achieved and lower levels of
inventory will be maintained.
